Embrace the Unc Window (for guys 28+)
People are obsessed with being young.
Youth worship is everywhere. Pop songs reminisce about the “Teenage Dream” and staying young forever. It’s as if the summer before college was the high-water mark of human existence. The average adult desires to freeze time in a world that felt fun, easy, and reckless. Think of movie characters like Uncle Rico in Napoleon Dynamite. He fights what he is — a middle-aged man — and refuses the call to grow up. Instead, he throws footballs outside his van while fantasizing about his high school glory days.
“Okay, Johnny, but these are art nerds or people from fictional dramas; no male role model today is acting this way.”
Enter biohacker and tech CEO Bryan Johnson, who competes with his son to achieve 20-year-old biomarker levels. Or look at “Clavicular,” the twenty-two-year-old internet icon leading a movement of young men who prioritize facial aesthetics and symmetry above all else. The message is clear: youth is king. But this is symptomatic of something deeper than a fear of getting older. These guys mistake the peak of their lives. They mistake when their abilities are actually the highest. They’ve lost the plot.
So, what’s the alternative?
The real main character is never a purposeless college kid. It’s a clear-eyed, steady 33-year-old at the height of his abilities. The man with a mission and something to lose. The best time of life is the protagonist era — the Unc Window.
You might feel a mild sense of horror reading this. You might think: “I don’t want to be out of touch. I don’t want to be an Unc. How is youth (13-27) not the peak of life?”
And I can hear the arguments:
“After 30, you get tied down. You have work and responsibilities. You’re married and have whiny kids. As a youth, you’re chilling; your body doesn’t hurt. You can drink all weekend and get up for 8 am classes without a hangover. You never miss a music festival. Isn’t that the best?” you counter. “Your physical markers and testosterone begin to decline after 28. Technically, you argue, your body and life are downhill after that.”
Studies show your body retains 90% of its maximum physical output in the Unc Window. In fact, many people report being their strongest in their 30s because they’re actually dedicated to lifting.
But more importantly, as you get older, you gain Mental Apex. Unc is wise. Unc is emotionally regulated and strategic.
During the Unc Window (28-45), you have accumulated sufficient real-world data points to be less reactive and more proactive. You aren’t as hotheaded. You have a wealth of trial-and-error to operate efficiently. You ambush at opportune moments. Energy management replaces unfocused raw effort. That 10% loss in strength is forgettable when considering a 300% boost in wisdom. Look at MMA.
The average age of an active MMA champion is 33. Seasoned fighters like Sean Strickland (35) and Justin Gaethje (37) are winning their respective weight classes. These uncs are dominating opponents in their 20s who, biologically speaking, should be faster and stronger. And yet, young fighters struggle. Uncs rejoice.
The accumulated wisdom here goes beyond the strategy of a single fight or performance. Experience also improves life outlook.
There’s not an 18-year-old on the planet who truly knows what they want and who they are. He believes not listening to the latest music or wearing the cleanest fit is deeply embarrassing. The young guy is led by partying, beauty, renown, adrenaline, and comfort. He acts as though responsibility and commitment will ruin his life. He hasn’t had the experiences that teach you chasing trends and desire is ‘high effort, low reward’. His values are whack.
Essentially, being young is not knowing what’s important. You don’t have a care in the world, remember? You don’t care about anything. Youth is not knowing the difference between good and evil or what’s valuable. On the other hand, Unc loves responsibility. Unc knows who he is. When you value your life and see how precious it is, you are an adult. When you still have the strength to back it up, you are Unc.
The best phase of life is when you are young enough to still use your body and old enough to know what’s important.
For unc, it’s all purpose, all quest.
His mission is the highest priority. He’s working on his business or at a company and job he believes in. He’s the return of the king. Unc Aragorn has an army of Orcs to slay tomorrow. He’s in bed by 10 PM and watching the sunrise before battle.
Unc has higher priorities than video games or dating apps. He isn’t led by pleasure and lust. Think about Batman; no one can sway him off the path. Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Batgirl, none of them. And that Unc fortitude drives those women crazy. It’s another example of energy management: working smarter, not harder. No chasing for the Unc. Because even if he decides to partake in a night out, who gets more girls, the 23-year-old seeking female validation— or the unbothered Unc on a mission?
A young guy might read this and fold his arms in resignation, “Well, I’m sold. I’m ready to be Unc.” And as a therapist and card-carrying Unc myself, I say hold your horses.
To resist what you are is to be a secondary character.
You’re basically a bugged NPC. Glitching around, fighting your programming. Embracing where you are in life is automatically protagonist-coded. If you are 18, great, recognize you are not at the height of your abilities. No reason to be upset. You have a window older folks don’t have anymore: tons of opportunity for risk and growth. You will be Unc soon. Quest and have fun doing whatever is helpful for society.
A Grand Unc (65+) might also be reading this.
If you’re 88, there’s still opportunity to make an impact and be the hero of your story, even if it’s your last day. To choose to treat your body with respect and to choose to help others. Because that’s what main characters do. They take a defiant stand. And within their zone of free will, choose to do what’s right. Whatever small lever they can pull to do good.
But for my guys in their 30s and 40s, do not waste this window. Do not fight what makes you seasoned. Quest hard. Embrace Unc.
